Local School Teams Up With Compassion Center!
On November 10th and 11th approximately 35 junior high students plus their chaperones from local school, Scottsdale Christian Academy, came to the Harvest Compassion Center to serve! The entire junior high did a school wide food drive benefiting the HCC followed by two groups of students who spent their morning sorting food and stocking the center. Teacher Kelly O’Donnell headed this effort, reaching out to the HCC as a way to bring more community support to the center. With SCA located only ten minutes from the HCC, the location was ideal. SCA designates several school days a year just for their students to go out into the community and serve with their hands and hearts.
“All the kids were really enthusiastic to be there working, and did what we asked very quickly! A great bunch of kids working well together as a team,” said a fellow volunteer. Not only did the kids get to see firsthand the center and hear how it serves the community, volunteer Nicolee Thompson also shared with the kids some staggering facts about hunger in the Phoenix area. “One in four kids in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the Mesa area are hungry every day and go without food, so I pulled four kids forward and told one kid that I was sorry, but she wouldn’t get to eat for the rest of the day and would wake up hungry. I think that illustration really got through to many of the kids who live with the reality that they always have enough food.”
The two days of service was a huge success, by the time the kids said goodbye they had fully stocked all the shelves in the HCC and sorted through many piles of clothes. One group even went above and beyond and as soon as they left the center stopped at the Dollar Store and purchased additional items for the HCC. All of us at MSC and the HCC would like to thank you, Scottsdale Christian Academy, or getting involved in your local community and helping us serve others!
