Howie Biemeck: High School Mission Trip to Porvenir, Mexico
The purpose of our mission trip to Mexico is three-fold. Our first aim is to help meet the needs of the missionaries and the families serving and living in Mexico. Our second purpose in going is to expose students to a cross-cultural missions experience with the hope of educating them and encouraging them to have a broader world-view. Finally, our hope is to get students outside of their comfort zones by serving in many different capacities. It also helps them understand what Jesus meant when He said, “It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant…even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life for the ransom of many.” Matthew 20:26,28
A few of the projects we had the opportunity to work on included a VBS outreach to a small village 30 minutes from Porvenir called Necua (Nek-wa). Necua is a town that did not have electricity until 5 years ago. The needs are great and the people are ripe for the gospel. This gave our students the opportunity to go into the community and distribute food while inviting the children to the VBS. As a result of the outreach, over 40 children heard the gospel of Jesus Christ taught. We also had the opportunity to work at a local orphanage for severely handicapped children. While there we played with the children, helped the full-time staff prepare meals and fed the kids. We were also able to prepare bedroom furniture for 30 boys to move into in the near future.
All in all, we were able to bless numerous families during our time in Mexico. Several students have already commented on their desire to go again next year and serve. My hope is to continue partnering with missions organizations for the purpose of putting feet to our faith. We are commanded to “Go and make disciples,” and that is our desire as a church!
