Exclusive Glory6I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, 7to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. - Isaiah 42:6–8 God’s glory is exclusive. Over and over, Scripture declares that God’s glory is the thing that He is most jealous about. So, what is God’s glory, exactly? God’s glory is what emanates from God. It’s evidence of His presence. We don’t ever see God; all we see is His glory. Isaiah 42:8 says, "I am the Lord, that is My name; My glory I will not give to another." Now, when you hear that, you might think, "Well, God’s kind of proud, isn’t He?" Really? You totally don’t get it. You still think that God’s just like a better version of us. God is completely transcendent; He is not like us at all. While we are made in His image, He is completely set apart and holy and righteous. And when He begins to work in His church or in this world, He doesn’t want people getting confused about Who is really doing the work. In Acts 12 an angry King Herod came to Tyre and Sidon to make a speech. At the end of the speech, somebody had the bright idea to start a chant, "It’s the voice of a god and not a man!" And everyone joined in! At that moment, Herod should have jumped up off the throne and said, "Hey, stop saying that. I’m a person just like you are." But he didn’t. Bad move. The Bible says that the angel of the Lord killed Herod, "because he did not give God the glory" (Acts 12:23). Peter had it right. In Acts 10, when God sent Peter to Cornelius’ house, Cornelius tried to worship him. You know what Peter did? He walked right over to him, took him by the hand, the Bible says, and lifting him up, said, "I am a man just like you." In the church today there is too much of "the glorification of the worm." People are seeking glory that belongs to God. There’s only one person that we worship—Jesus Christ. And there’s only one name that we lift up and it’s His. When Jesus says come I will simply come. When He says let go — I let go — when He says trust God in this matter I trust. This work of obedience is the evidence that the nature of God is in me. |
