Dr. James McDonald

Jesus Is Lord

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
—Colossians 1:15-18

Colossians 1:15-18 is one of the primary passages in all of Scripture on the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is Lord: What does that mean exactly? Well, it means first of all, that he's unique. By unique, I mean that He is unparalleled and unprecedented. There have been some imposters and imitators, but there is only one real deal, all right? He's unique. Colossians 1:15 says, "He is the image of the invisible God." Image translates the word from which we get our English word "icon." It means He is the exact replica (see also John 1:18 and Hebrews 1:3). It also means that Jesus is the only God you'll ever see. No one can see God and live, God the Father. The Trinity is a mystery, but we do know this: there is one God eternally existing in three persons, and Jesus is the only God you will ever see. Jesus is as visible as God gets!

So, when verse 15 says that Jesus Christ is "The invisible God, the first born of all creation." He is the greatest phenomenon to ever cross the horizon of this world. He is Jesus Christ the Lord. There is no one who can be compared to Him. He is unique.

Jesus is the Creator. "For by Him all things were created" (v.16). When  "God said, let there be light," (Genesis 1:3), those words came out of the mouth of Jesus Christ the pre-incarnate Christ, the second person of the Trinity. He created the entire universe. You are following the Creator of the universe, Jesus Christ the Lord. He made it all.

Jesus is also the head (v.18). When the Scriptures say that Jesus is the head of the Church it refers to all the functions that are in the head: smelling, tasting, speaking, hearing, seeing—Christ is that for His Church. It all happens right here at Control Center.

And, lastly, and very importantly, Jesus Christ is preeminent.  Preeminent—Jesus, the first. He's got to be number one in our church and in your family. But none of those things will ever be possible unless He's number one in your heart. He can't be first anywhere else until He's first in you.

Friday 3/5/2004

Today was a good day! I got a large job I'm so excited. God has really blessed me with a good start to this year. I worked a long day at the office then I worked on finishing someone's basement from 6 – 11:30 – it's alright it felt good to put the tools on and do some hard labor.

Peter said to Jesus, but Lord what about this man? Jesus said to him what is that to you? You follow Me! We have to be careful about interfering with God's plan – we can help people & pray for them and keep it on God but the minute we take it into our hands it's no good.
