2011 Torch Award Scholarship Recipient: Laurel Clarkson

This year’s female winner of the 2011- 2012 Torch Award Scholarship is Laurel Clarkson, a rising senior attending Harvest Christian Academy.  She beat out some top notch applicants to be chosen this year.  Take a minute to read below as to what winning this honor means to her and her plans as she enters her senior year:

1. What does receiving the Torch Award mean to you?

Receiving the Torch Award this year means a great deal to me. Being honored with this scholarship gives me the opportunity to represent a school and charity in which I believe the Lord has established and supports. I am blessed to have been chosen and I pray to embody the full mission of MSC, as well as that of Harvest Christian Academy , this coming year and through out my entire walk with Christ.

2. How will receiving the Torch Award impact your life next school year at HCA?

As I enter into my school year, here at Harvest, I plan to be an active supporter in all school events, specifically sports. In addition, I will strive to shine the light of Christ more vibrantly to others in both my community and school. I hope to make the absolute best of my last year in high school, by finishing with the steadfastness granted to me by the Lord.

3. What are some things you’ve been looking forward to getting involved in this school year at HCA?

In my final year of High School I am privileged and enthused to be a part of a new school spirit club, called BOSS. Backers Of School Spirit will rally students to become much more active in school spirit. The club’s goal is to have committed active participation in all sporting and extracurricular events. In this coming year, I am also pleased to be serving as the Secretary and Treasurer of the High School student council. I am overjoyed to get the chance to back my amazing school in both of these positions as I enter a new year.

4. Tell us your grade level for next year and as well as sport teams you participate on.

This year I will be entering into my senior year and am totally enthused to be an active participant in Harvest’s Cheerleading Squad this coming year.

5. How do you strive to be a ‘torch’ for the Lord among your family, friends and peers?

I strive to be a torch of God’s light to others around me by equipping myself daily with the strength of the Lord and being in constant prayer that He may reveal to me situations in which I could share even a small glimmer of His glory. He brightens my day by His majesty and I want to share the light of my beautiful Savior with others who find themselves in a place of darkness, even if that means simply sharing a smile with a lonely friend.

6. Anything else you want to add about winning the award.

I am 100% enthused about being gracefully allowed this opportunity and I pray that I will be given the chance to use this as an arrow to God’s faithfulness and awesomeness. The Torch Award is a blessing to me and my family and I thank MSC for this outstanding opportunity. I am excited about beginning another year at my marvelous school, Harvest Christian Academy !

Our Mission

Mitchell Swaback Charities was started October 15th, 2004. Our purpose is to continue to impact individuals, organizations and families as Mitch has done so many times. We want to continue Mitch's compassion to serve in missions, the church and to honor God in the way Mitch did on a daily basis. We will continue to form partnerships that will allow us to expand our ministry.

Through the many opportunities that surround us, we look forward to making a difference.

We will honor the Lord in all we do. Learn more >>

Mitch's Story

For 23 years our son Mitch etched memories into the hearts of everyone he met. He was as real as they come. What he meant to us and to so many others now belongs to the legacy we will cherish forever.

At Mitch's going-home service Pastor James MacDonald used one word that best described Mitch: "Maximum." Read more >>
