Staci Hoover: Journal Entry #3

I WILL NEVER BE ENDORSED BY NIKE. There, I said it.  The world of amateur sports can be intimidating.  With each race completed I have watched a steady stream of professional and novice athletes finish sometimes hours ahead of me.  I like to be good at what I do, who doesn't?  This type of race and distance seems to be the great leveler, separating the people who are genetically gifted and the ones who are not.  I am not.

I will never earn a top place finish in a race and this used to bother me.  I began to realize this kind of attitude was robbing me of the joy of the sport.  I'm not fast but hey, I'm out there aren't I.

I live near Chicago, and throughout my life on special occasions I would take a horse and carriage ride to see the sights of the city.  On more than one occasion I've observed the blinders that the horses have attached to the side of their heads.  This ensures they will remain focused on the task they are to do…….carrying tourists around the city!  When I am in a race, tired, anxious, intimidated, and losing focus, I simply envision myself with those same blinders and complete my own race to the best of my ability regardless of what others are doing around me.

If you ever felt like you wanted to do something, but didn't feel like you were good enough……..you can borrow my blinders.

Our Mission

Mitchell Swaback Charities was started October 15th, 2004. Our purpose is to continue to impact individuals, organizations and families as Mitch has done so many times. We want to continue Mitch's compassion to serve in missions, the church and to honor God in the way Mitch did on a daily basis. We will continue to form partnerships that will allow us to expand our ministry.

Through the many opportunities that surround us, we look forward to making a difference.

We will honor the Lord in all we do. Learn more >>

Mitch's Story

For 23 years our son Mitch etched memories into the hearts of everyone he met. He was as real as they come. What he meant to us and to so many others now belongs to the legacy we will cherish forever.

At Mitch's going-home service Pastor James MacDonald used one word that best described Mitch: "Maximum." Read more >>
