Staci Hoover - Half Ironman Competition
Six months of training came to a victorious end as Staci Hoover completed the Half Ironman Triathlon May 21st, 2006 in Orlando Florida. Staci's journey to the finish has been a grueling personal test of integrity and fortitude. Early in her training Staci decided to partner with the Foundation on behalf of her cousin Mitch. She challenged family, friends, and partners of the foundation to pledge an amount for each mile she completed. Staci represented herself, and her cousin with the heart of a champion.
The 70.3 mile competition began at 6:30 a.m. with a 1.2 mile swim. Staci finished the swim six minutes ahead of her personal best. She proceeded to the 56 mile bike ride again finishing with a personal best time. The third leg of the triathlon is a 13.1 mile run. The Florida temperature rose to 94 degrees with plenty of Florida humidity. Staci completed the entire event in just over 6 ½ hours. A testament to her training, commitment, and heart.
Bob and Gaye Swaback, founders of the Mitchell Swaback Foundation were on hand to witness Staci compete. Bob commented, "I witnessed over two thousand athletes compete in one of the most grueling races I have ever seen. I have earned a new respect this sport."
Staci accomplished something most people would never even consider trying. She triumphed over pain and fatigue to reach a determined goal. She is an inspiration to her family, the memory of Mitch, and to all involved with the Mitchell Swaback Foundation.
Staci's friends pledged $117.56 per mile. Her finish raised a total of $8,264.46. The Mitchell Swaback Foundation is humbled and grateful to Staci for her dedication, her perseverance, and her compassion, and we are all pretty proud of her too. Thanks Staci.
