1. Tell us about yourself and your family?
I moved to Chicago in September of 2000 from Oklahoma.  I moved because I met the love of my life, Arrean.  I currently live in Plainfield, IL with my wife, Arrean, and our 4 month old son, James.  I love spending time with family and friends.  I enjoy working with my hands doing projects at home and landscaping.  I also enjoy running and working out.  I am a Financial Planner with MetLife Securities.

2. Have you ever done a half of full marathon before?
I ran my first marathon in the 2006 Chicago Marathon.  I have also run various half marathons, 10K, and 5K races.

3. What are your biggest challenges for this race and what is your goal?
My biggest challenge is spending the time training and remaining injury free.  The goal for running a marathon is first to make it to the start line and then just to finish.  Beyond that, I would love to finish with a time of 3:55.

4. How did you know Mitch?
I met Mitch in 2000 when I moved to Chicago.  I was introduced by my brother-in-law, Mitch's cousin, Jeff Harbeck.  I spent a great deal of time with Mitch, and his excitement for life was a testament to live every day to the fullest.  I noticed his love for God and others, and I saw it mature during the last couple years of his life.  I can honestly say that if we had more people like Mitch in this world, life would be better for us all.

5. Why are you doing this race for MSF?
I want to run this race for MSF because I believe in what the foundation stands for and how it is changing lives.  I have been involved in the renovation projects at Tabitha House.  It helps to see first hand how MSF is impacting others.  I believe we all deserve to live in a clean environment with some basic comforts.  If you could see the faces of these individuals at Tabitha House after a project is completed, it would explain everything. I think 18 weeks of training compared to the pain others endure everyday is such a small sacrifice.  I want to raise money to help MSF finish more projects.

November Update  •  Thursday, November 01, 2007

1. Would you or are you planning on running this distance again?
Yes, I will take a few years off to let my body recover and have time to accomplish other goals.

2. Explain what it was like to run on the hottest day in the Chicago Marathon 30 year history?
Well, what can I say...It was very hot and humid with more sweat than you can imagine.  I am happy to say I finished and experience a historic day in marathon history.  On mile 23 I saw a man fall and go into convulsions.  I ran a half mile in the wrong direction to get a medic for help.  When I think about running a race for Mitch, this was the perfect race.  This race is going down in history and will be remembered for many, many years to come...just like Mitch.

3. Lastly, please write something to each of your sponsors, it can be a thank you, share a verse, something from your heart.
I want to thank everyone for their support of the foundation.  This race was one of the hardest events of my life and to have friends and family participate in the remembrance of Mitch shows his impact on all of us.

October Update  •  Monday, October 01, 2007

1. Please tell us how many months you have been training for this race and if you have your training totals please share.  (include running & biking mileage and any other cross training you have done)
I have been training for 16 weeks, so about 4 months.  As of September 22, I have ran approximately 300 miles.

2. Tell us what you’ll be doing the Saturday before the race?
The day before the race I will be resting (on my butt), drinking lots of water, and eating good carbs.

3. The race is almost here, please share your thoughts about the endless hours of training, your sacrifices and what this has done to impact or even change your life?
Training for the marathon is a huge time commitment.  Many days I can't wait for the training to be over, but I know in a way I will miss it when it's over.  I have done all my long runs very early Saturday mornings (I get up at 4:30), so that I don't miss too much time with my family.  I have made my training goal so far of not missing any long runs and remaining injury free.

September Update  •  Wednesday, August 29, 2007

1. Share with us your workout schedule for August?
I am doing short runs of 3 or 4 miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  On Wednesdays I run 7 or 8 miles.  Saturdays are long runs of 10, 15, 16, and 12 miles.  I do push up and sit ups on rest days.

2. How are you holding up physically and mentally?
I feel great physically and mentally.  Currently my only issue is that the end of a few toes look really nasty.  I'm saving my energy for race day.

3. Athletes Journal:
This is the first time I have ever been involved with a sponsorship event, and I'm proud to say it is because of Mitch.

August Update  •  Wednesday, August 29, 2007

1. What makes you keep going on a day when you just aren't having a good run or training day?
The thought of failure is not an option.  I have a responsibility to the individuals that are sponsoring me.

2. What things are you doing to prepare physically and mentally for the marathon?
Physically, I am maintaining a smart training program.  I would prefer to under train than over train.  Mentally, I am just staying focused and can't wait to start the marathon.

3. In what ways are your family or friends helping support you while training?
My wife is very encouraging and understanding with the time commitment needed for training. Co-workers also give encouraging words.

Is there anyone in particular that helps motivate you?
I'm motivated by the 65 year old that passes me up every Saturday while training.

July Update  •  Monday, July 02, 2007

1. With three months remaining before your race what's going through your mind?
I am focused on consistent training...rain or shine!  I am also focused on raising money by finding as many sponsors as possible.  The more people that sponsor me, the more that will visit the MSF website bringing awareness to the foundation.

2. What is your training schedule for the month of July?
My long runs this month are 10, 7, 12, and 13 miles on Saturdays.  I do 3 shorter runs mid-week.

3. What is your long run up to?
My longest run so far is 9 miles.

4. Athletes Journal:
Marathon training is a tough journey.  After running the marathon last year, I planned to take this year off.  Once I heard about the opportunity to run and raise money for MSF, I could not pass it up.  With work and family life (new baby in February) being so busy, running is a stress relief for me. Since I do most of my running alone, it gives me time to reflect on life and pray.

Mitch's Story

For 23 years our son Mitch etched memories into the hearts of everyone he met. He was as real as they come. What he meant to us and to so many others now belongs to the legacy we will cherish forever.

At Mitch's going-home service Pastor James MacDonald used one word that best described Mitch: "Maximum." Read more >>
