November Update  •  Thursday, November 01, 2007

1. Would you or are you planning on running this distance again?
I would love to run this distance again.  I felt like I didn’t truly “ran the marathon” because I ended up walking a big portion at the end as I was directed to do so by the officials.  I know I could finish with a much better time, so I would to have the opportunity to do it again.

2. Explain what it was like to run on the hottest day in the Chicago Marathon 30 year history?
It was definitely a day I will never forget.  The spectators were wonderful.   Some were spraying us with hoses, others were handing out ice or water, while others were caring for those that were down on the sidelines, and of course they were cheering us on.

3. Lastly please write something to each of your sponsors, it can be a thank you, share a verse, something from your heart.
Thank you to everyone who supported me financially and through prayers.  When it was getting difficult to run, it was such an encouragement to know that so many people were praying for me and that I was running the race with a larger purpose than crossing the finishing line.  You truly helped me make it to the finish line.

October Update  •  Monday, October 01, 2007

1. Please tell us how many months you have been training for this race and if you have your training totals please share.  (include running & biking mileage and any other cross training you have done)
I have been officially training since the beginning of June, but I was running before then.   In the past four months I have ran 367 miles to train for the marathon, by the day of the race I will have run 435 miles.

2. Tell us what you’ll be doing the Saturday before the race?
I will be spending time with family and friends. : )

3. The race is almost here, please share your thoughts about the endless hours of training, your sacrifices and what this has done to impact or even change your life?
I had no idea how much time training for the marathon would take.  It has definitely been a commitment. I have found that even when every part of my body is telling me to stop or not to run at all, my mind can still convince my body to keep going.  It is amazing how much you can convince yourself you can do.

I have found myself questioning my priorities a lot throughout the training as I was juggling my schedule around.  I have had to be very proactive about scheduling my time and making sure God was ultimately first in my life, that I was taking care of my responsibilities as a wife, and that I was doing my best as a teacher.  Training for the marathon has made me ask myself daily, “Are my priorities where they should be?”

Although training has made my schedule hectic, it has also given me time to think.  It is easy for me to get caught up in the business of life and never actually think about my life.  Running has given me time to think about who I am, and if that matches who God created me to be.

  1. How are you holding up physically and mentally?
Physically I am doing really well; besides being worn out after the long runs.J  Mentally I am doing well too.  The only trouble I have is fitting all of the training into my schedule.  Things have gotten busy with the school year started and the runs keep getting longer.  Overall, I am getting very excited for the big day.

Our Mission

Mitchell Swaback Charities was started October 15th, 2004. Our purpose is to continue to impact individuals, organizations and families as Mitch has done so many times. We want to continue Mitch's compassion to serve in missions, the church and to honor God in the way Mitch did on a daily basis. We will continue to form partnerships that will allow us to expand our ministry.

Through the many opportunities that surround us, we look forward to making a difference.

We will honor the Lord in all we do. Learn more >>

Mitch's Story

For 23 years our son Mitch etched memories into the hearts of everyone he met. He was as real as they come. What he meant to us and to so many others now belongs to the legacy we will cherish forever.

At Mitch's going-home service Pastor James MacDonald used one word that best described Mitch: "Maximum." Read more >>
